Most Americans check their cell phones dozens of times a day to update Facebook, reply to texts, Tweet…and occasionally even to make a call.

But most of us think little about how we get that signal, and how important it is to our daily lives. (Some of us know this too well, since we have to go outside our homes to intercept a flicker of connection.)

So how does your cell phone company ensure that you have the signal you need, when and where you need it?

It’s a fairly straightforward process. Companies determine where they need more signal by looking at subscribers and phone traffic in a certain area. More usagecreates more demand. Carriers will put up antennas to serve an area; many times, multiple companies will share a tower.

Traditionally, mammoth cell towers have been erected in fields or other rural areas. Those towers transmit signal for miles, bouncing messages from one tower to another and eventually to and from your phone.

But more and more antennas are being installed in tight quarters, like urban centers, public parks, on rooftops and inside large public buildings. Some are being installed inside church steeples (churches can charge rent for this space!), in farm silos, in crosses and even in extended “faux” rooftops.

Because antennas aren’t typically very attractive, companies like STEALTH are in the business of concealing them. They’ve created all sorts of clever housings for antennas, that are designed to look just like existing brick chimneys, classic water towers, flagpoles and endless other things.

If you live in a place that needs more wireless signal, contact your provider and let them know.

Citizens nationwide are encouraging their local zoning boards to require concealment for new towers. You can attend local planning meetings and advocate for good-looking infrastructure.

By paying close attention to what’s going on in your backyard, you can help make the most of wireless service in your community.
